So you have decided that you would like an automatic gate and or fencing system to secure your property, and it must compliment your home design! No problems you have come to the right place. For us this marks the beginning of an involved process to deliver on your expectations. Having been involved in this industry for over 20 years this is no mean feat, from concept to completion there is a process that is commonly underestimated by those not in the industry. The purpose of this post is to help you, the homeowner understand what goes into a gate project and also give you an insight into how our custom manufacturing and installation process works. By the end of this post I think you will see why it’s never simply “Just A Gate”.
I’VE DECIDED I WANT AN AUTOMATIC GATE SYSTEM OR SECURITY FENCE. WHAT DO I DO NOW?
The first step is to contact us. There are a number of ways that you can do this which include, online chat, email, phone, or just walk into our showroom. To allow us to find the right system for you we have compiled a list of general questions below that we will discuss to better help you.
- What is your address? This simply helps our team do some research utilising public information available in Google Maps or the like and allows them to get the lay of the land so to speak. This usually gives us a good indication as to the type of gate that will best suit your site as well as needs.
- What is the main reason you would like a gate? This is an important factor in the design phase as different materials provide different functionality in terms of containment and aesthetics. (See also a previous post https://secureentry.com.au/blog-posts/gate-systems/)
- What is your estimated budget? This isn’t an upsell strategy, this helps our team determine the style of gate and automation that fits within your budget. It also helps our team discover any areas in which they may reduce costs to deliver the perfect system for you.
If you have answered the above questions we are well on our way to designing the perfect system for your property.
WHAT’S NEXT –
1. THE INDICATIVE QUOTE
As the name suggests, based on your answers to the above questions during our first communication, our team will prepare an indicative quote based on your vision for the project. It is important to remember that this is just a starting point to help further narrow your vison of what your finished gate will look and operate like.
I’M HAPPY WITH THE INDICATIVE PRICE WHAT’S NEXT?
Perfect we nailed it on the first proposal! Now our team will book in a detailed site inspection to ensure that everything in the indicative quote is as per the site requirements. If any concerns or possible issues are uncovered on site your consultant will discuss these with you and provide solutions to ensure these are addressed. If needed an update to your quote will be provided to reflect the site conditions. It is also key in transferring the gate installation layout and plan to the gate install teams to ensure a smooth project completion. By this stage you will also be required to submit the initial deposit for which payment and reference details are provided on your project quote.
I’M NOT HAPPY WITH THE PRICE WHAT CAN WE DO?
Talk to your consultant as all is not lost. In the instance that the price is a little more than you thought our team can suggest alternative solutions as it is rare that we cannot find a solution to fit. This may include looking at things like design or even you getting involved with some aspects of the project to help reduce the final cost.
2. I HAVE ACCEPTED YOUR QUOTE & PAID A DEPOSIT
Great! Thank you for your business we look forward to working with you. As soon as your deposit is received your job is prepared for review by our project team. This review is completed with inconjunction with both the sales and project teams to ensure every detail that has been discussed so far is made clear to ensure we deliver exactly what you asked for.
PRE-INSTALLATION SITE WORKS
If during the review it has been identified that your site requires site works prior to installing a gate this is the stage where they will be planned and booked. This will typically happen within 5-10 business days of you accepting our proposal. Some examples of common pre-install site works include concrete plinth works (concrete footing for your gate to slide), powder coating and concreting in support posts and electrical works.
MY SITE WORK IS DONE OR I DIDN’T REQUIRE ANY
Excellent that’s phase 2 complete. Your site is now ready for the final measure.
During this stage the consultant will take plenty of photos of your site along with detailed measurements using both analogue and laser level technology. This is then recorded in a format that our in-house draftsperson will use to draft your conceptual drawings for you to approve before manufacturing. This is also another check phase to ensure the gate that we plan to manufacture is going to fit and functions perfectly on your site.
Once you have received your scaled CAD gate drawings you will required to confirm your acceptance of the gate design as well as nominate your chosen powder coating colour in writing via return email (colour chart here). If there is anything that doesn’t agree with your expectation now is the time to let us know so we can amend prior to fabrication. During this phase please appreciate that it is important that all confirmations or changes be recorded in writing in order to minimise errors or risking your gate not looking like you had pictured in your mind.
3. I’M HAPPY WITH THE GATE DESIGN AND HAVE CHOSEN MY COLOUR
Time for phase three. Your plans are now turned into schematical documents for both the fabrication and installation teams. During this time you will not hear from us as regularly as before however, don’t be alarmed as we are simply busy in the background preparing to build your gate. Once your drawings move beyond the fabrication and installation team approval your gate is on a fast track to completion.
WHAT’S THE FABRICATION PROCESS
Generally speaking no two gates are ever the same, not just from a looks perspective but also from a dimensional or geometric perspective. Thanks to the previous outlined steps above we have an extremely accurate account of your site allowing us to make a gate to exactly fit your site. We don’t try and squeeze a square peg in a round hole so to speak we are providing you a tailor made solution.
Our team of qualified fabricators are now measuring, cutting, welding, grinding and sanding to produce a quality custom made gate for you. By this time the fabricators have not only taken into account the obvious design requirements but have also considered the geometric requirements of the automation to be fitted, the location of the final installation and the possible effects of wind and sun to ensure the material profiles are adequate. This fabrication process generally takes about a week from the time the fabricators are provided drawings.
4. TIME TO ADD SOME COLOUR
Your project has now been fabricated, sanded, cleaned and quality inspected. It is now off to the powder coaters to be coated in your previously chosen colour from the Dulux or Interpon powder coating range (colour chart here). It will remain with the powder coaters for several days. While here it will be dipped in an acid bath, dried, coated and baked to achieve a durable finish. Once the baking process is complete it is then inspected by the powder coaters quality control officer and subsequently released for our team to pickup. During this phase our scheduling team are organising for your job to be installed as close to the time your gate arrives back at the factory as possible. Our team will contact you to ensure that the proposed install date works for you also.
The day is finally here. Today is the day that all the behind the scenes hard work comes to fruition. Our fully insured installers will be onsite at the pre-arranged time to install your project. Depending on the size, style and scope of your gate project they may be on site from as little as a day. Our onsite installation team are employed by us and will also be the team that service your gate according to your maintenance requirements. Once the install is complete one of the installers will complete a handover with you to ensure you understand the basics of the system and how to use and care for it to guarantee longevity.
After Sales Care
Once your gate system is installed we foresee that you will enjoy extended periods of trouble free use. The manufactures of the automation equipment recommend a minimum service interval of 12months for residential and 6 months for commercial projects. Statistics show that this regular servicing in most cases reduces the frequency of breakdowns and extends the lifespan of gate motors.
As you can see from the above process “It’s Not Just A Gate”. Custom automatic gates and fencing are a substantial investment. It’s important to remember that your gate and fence are the last thing you see when leaving home for the day and the first thing you see when you return. So why rush things and risk getting it wrong? You want to not only like the design, you want to make sure it is suitable for your site to provide hassle free, reliable operation well into the future.
